Lagos recruits non- education graduates for schools

THE Lagos State
Government has recruited
graduates without teaching
qualifications to teach core
subjects in its secondary
schools, Commissioner for
Education, Mrs. Olayinka
Oladunjoye, said, yesterday.
In a statement, the
commissioner declared that
the recruitment of single-
subject graduates was aimed
at providing jobs for
unemployed youths and
repositioning education
standard in the state.
She said the teachers would
teach core-subjects such as
Mathematics, English,
Biology, Chemistry and
Physics.
The commissioner expressed
the hope that the recruits
would become better
teachers in the classrooms,
after some training.
Oladunjoye said: “I charge
those who got the job to be
committed and productive
so as to prove that the state
government has put the
right teachers to teach in its
schools. Meantime, Governor
Babatunde Fashola,
yesterday, said the state had
raised promotion marks for
pupils in public schools to 50
per cent, a measure aimed at
improving the standard of
education in the state
schools.
Fashola also splashed N256
million on 128 public junior
and senior secondary
schools in the state under
the Lagos Eko project.
The governor, who made
this remark at the second
Governor’s Education Award
in Ikeja, said any student
who does not score a
minimum of 50 per cent in
each of their subject coupled
with 50 per cent aggregate
score in their exams, will not
be promoted henceforth.

Prof. Ganiyu Ambali Is The New Vice Chancellor Of University Of Ilorin (UNILORIN)

The Governing Council
of the University of
Ilorin have earlier today
announced the
emergence of Prof.
Ganiyu Ambali of the
institution’s Veterinary
Medicine department as
the new Vice-Chancellor
following the expiration
of the tenure of the
incumbent due in
October.
.
Ambali emerged winner
out of a total of 20
seasoned aspirants that
included 19 professors
from the university and
one from outside. His
appointment according
to insiders (of which
I’m one) is seen as a
form of pacification to
the Ilorin indigenes
who wanted one of
their own at the helms
at all cost.
Another reason is that
Ambali was said to have
been the preferred
candidate in 2007
when the post was
vacant but was
disqualified on the
ground that Unilorin do
not run academic
programme in his field
of Veterinary Medicine.
.
It will not be wrong to
posit that the
Veterinary Medicine
department was finally
created in 2009 bearing
him in mind as he
got employed into the
department that same
year.
.
Congratulations to Prof.
Ganiyu Ambali.
May God give you the
wisdom to enable
surpass the
achievements of your
predecessor, Prof. Is-
haq Olanrewaju
Oloyede.

250 Fresh Teachers Inducted In Ogun, Enugu States

Teachers Registration
Council of Nigeria
(TRCN) recently
registered and certified
250 education
graduates of Olabisi
Onabanjo
University (OOU), and
Nnamdi Azikiwe
University (UNIZIK), at
the maiden induction of
graduating teachers in
the two universities.
.
Speaking at the
induction ceremonies
which took place in
Ogun and Anambra
States respectively, the
registrar of TRCN,
Professor Addison-Mark
Wokocha, said the Post
Doctoral Diploma in
Education was designed
by TRCN in conjunction
with the University
of Ilorin, to provide a
conducive atmosphere
for university
professors who have
spent their entire lives
in a university system
and are still considered
unqualified for
registration,
certification and
licensing by
TRCN because they lack
educational
qualifications.
.
Inducting the new
graduates, the TRCN
boss charged the
inductees to make strict
adherence to
professional ethics their
watchword since the
council would not
condone any form of
professional
misconduct from any
member. He added that
TRCN has written to the
attorney general of the
federation for a fiat to
commence the
immediate prosecution
of unqualified teachers
in the nation’s school.
Wokocha charged them
to conduct themselves
in such a manner that
the reputation of the
noble profession is
constantly enhanced,
stressing that the
observance of all the
ethical conducts as
provided in the
‘Teachers Code of
Conduct’
was a must.
.
In his speech, the vice
chancellor of Olabisi
Onabanjo University,
OOU, Professor Wale Are
Olaitan, said the TRCN
mandate to totally
overhaul and reposition
the education system
and teaching as a
profession cannot be
under estimated.
According to him, TRCN
has elevated the
profession to be at par
with other established
professions like Law,
Medicine,
Engineering and
Accounting.

stressed the need for
Nigerians to embrace
the reading culture.
.
“ One of the ways in
which people can help
in strengthening the
growth of the

help this country to
address the problem, ’’
he said.
.
The NUC Executive
Secretary, Prof. Julius
Okojie, admitted that
the country was still
grappling with the
problem of writing,
even
among professors.
He recalled that a similar
gesture was made by a
member of the National
Assembly and urged
Nigerians to emulate
them by
contributing to the
development of the
education sector.

Fashola: No promotion for students with below 50% scores

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has said that henceforth any student in public schools that scores below 50 per cent aggregate in all subjects, including  English Language and Mathematics  will not be promoted. UNICAL boils again over SUG elections

THE Social Science  Students Association (SOSSA), University of Calabar, is engulfed in another political tussle as the Ebri Edmond-led 2010/2011 dispensation ends. The fight is between two contenders aiming to succeed Ebri Edmond.
The Ebri dispensation witnessed countless petitions and counter-petitions as a result of what some termed “Ebri misrule.”
The election which was staged in the institution’s Hagan Bassey pavilion was massively attended by observers and students as the undergraduate social scientists trooped out en masse to exercise their franchise.

42 years after, free education takes off in Imo

EDUCATION is the major industry in Imo State and all former administrations told whoever cared this bit. Despite this supposed position of successive administrations, not much was done to improve the infrastructure, which dilapidated terribly since after the Nigerian civil war in 1970.
Apart from what the immediate past state administration did to redress the sagging infrastructure and paucity of trained classroom teachers, the Rochas Okorocha government has taken the bull by the horn.
He first announced his intentions when he flagged off his gubernatorial campaign. He promised free education to the citizenry. This expectedly boosted his rating before the people and the votes came in torrents.
Soon after his swearing-in, Okorocha not only reiterated his earlier promise of giving free education to children but went a little further to announce that such children will also be given textbooks, school bags,

Admission racketeering: Police quiz IMT director, others

CONCERNED National Diploma graduates of the Institute of Management and Technology, IMT, Enugu and other polytechnics, who applied for admission into the institution’s Higher National Diploma, HND, for year 2011/2012, have petitioned the Director of State Security Services, SSS, in Enugu State and the National Board for Technical Education, NBTE, over alleged admission racketeering.
Vanguard learnt that the police have interrogated the Chairman of the Admission Committee, Mr. Chris Ejiogu, while two other staff had been invited in connection with the reported saga during this year’s admission.

UNILAG: Why Jonathan should reverse himself on name change

Mr Wahab Shittu is a lecturer in the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos and  a private prosecutor with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. In this interview, he speaks passionately on why the proposed renaming of the University of Lagos after Chief Moshood Abiola should be reversed. Excerpts:
WHAT is your stance on the renaming of the University of Lagos after Chief Moshood Abiola?
I have the highest respect for the office and person of the President. Let me also say that I recognise the imperative of honouring late Chief M.K.O Abiola for the enormous sacrifice he made on June 12 and in preserving our democratic experiment. I believe that he deserves to be immortalised.

MOUAU ADMISSION SYSTEM: THE COMPETITIVE QUOTA ANALYSIS

This write
up is
specifically meant for all
aspirants of the Micheal Okpara
University Of Agriculture,
Umudike, who are still yet to see
their Names in the 2012/2013
MOUAU admission list.
Read It Carefully And
Attentively.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Basically, admission at MOUAU is
based on a competitive quota
system.
What does that mean?
This simply means that during
the admission process, each
department/course is allocated a
certain number of student slots
within the total admission quota
for the entire University and
these slots are competitively
allocated.
So assuming the University has
about 2,000 slots approved by
NUC for a particular session, this
number is divided between the
depts/courses.
Soil Science, Botany, Agronomy
may be given less than 50 slots
each, while the more
competitive Agribusiness,
Microbiology, Comp Eng, Comp
Science, may be given about
150 slots each. And other depts/
courses in order of size and
competitiveness.
During the selection process, all
the students who applied for
each of these courses are listed
according to the scores they
have, in descending order.
Then selection is made based on
the quota allocated for that
dept/course for that year.
Therefore if after sorting the
names a candidates name falls
as the 88th person in order of
score for a particular
programme that was allocated
50 slots, obviously such a
candidate will not be admitted.
Typically, applications received
for the programmes mentioned
earlier ranges around these
figures during Post UTME:
• Soil Science – less than 20,
• Botany – about 100,
• Agronomy – less than 10,
while
• Agribusiness – abt 1,300,
• Microbiology – almost 1,000,
• Comp Eng – abt 900,
• Comp Science – over 1,000,
etc.
• Civil Engr – abt 300-400.
With the explanation above and
the figures shown here, you will
discover that a candidate who
was denied admission in Comp
Engineering, will find another
candidate with the same scores,
being offered admission to read
Civil Engr.
This is because the competition
is less heated there.
Equally a candidate who was
denied admission to read
Biochemistry, will find out that
the scores of several of those
admitted to read Botany/
Zoology are much lower than
his/hers. And when this
happens such a candidate will
start complaining and claiming
that he/she was denied
admission as a result of
corruption and bribery,
obviously not understanding
the way the system works.
I can categorically tell you that
the merit admissions at MOUAU
are processed 100% on merit.
After the merit admissions, then
comes the supplementary
admissions. But many of our
prospective students do not
know that supplementary
admissions is not automatic.
You need to indicate interest
and apply for it. If you don’t
apply for the supplementary
admissions at the right time,
the result is that a candidate
who scored lower than you,
but who indicated interested
and applied through the proper
channels will be admitted and
you still find yourself without
admission and probably
complaining.
That Shall Not Be Your Portion.
Amen.
AUTHOR: Obioma Anyanwu
(Webmaster at Micheal Okpara
University Of Agriculture)
Be ready when the
supplementary comes, and Note:
Its about being First.
Apply for the less populated
courses to have a higher chance
of success through the process.

Study Abroad Scholarship Tips

Studying abroad has
become the norm among
college undergraduates.
Being immersed in another
culture gives you the
opportunity to turn your
traditional education on its
side. Many students miss out
on the opportunity to go,
because they think it’s too
expensive. It’s definitely not
a cheap endeavor, but
studying abroad is not as
out of reach as many think.
Understanding the types of
scholarships available,
knowing where to look, and
making yourself stand out
can all make studying
abroad possible.
Types of Scholarships
Merit-Based: These
scholarships are awarded
based on abilities such as
academic, athletic, and
artistic. Sometimes those in
charge of the money will
take extracurricular
activities and community
service into account as well.
Student-Specific: Though
minority scholarships are
the most common of this
kind, student-specific
scholarships all deal with
factors like gender, race,
religion, family, and medical
history.
Destination-Specific: As the
title implies, these
scholarships are offered by
the country where the
student plans to study.
Government supported
websites of these countries
are an excellent resource for
listings and insight on what
they may be looking to give
away.
Program-Specific: Individual
programs or schools offer
these to students and they
based on both personal and
academic performance. The
qualifications will vary
based on programs and
locations.
Subject-Specific: These
scholarships have to do with
the student’s field(s) of
study or majors. Students
may be required to enroll in
certain courses or perform
research/duties while
abroad to use the money.
Where to Look
The best place to start your
scholarship hunt is college
or university through which
you are planning to study
abroad. Many offer their
own scholarships and
resources. For outside
funding, check out sites of
public organizations that

Katsina tertiary institutions begin strike today

The Joint Consultative Forum of
the three tertiary institutions of
Katsina State will begin an
indefinite strike from today, a
statement from union has
revealed.
The statement, which was signed
by the chairman of the
association, Hassan Usman Katsina
Polytechnic chapter, Comrade
Tukur Dahiru Bakiyawa and five
others, said the strike was
imperative following the state
government’s failure to meet their
demands.
Some of the demands, according
to the union, include the non-
implementation of 2012 yearly
increment and nonpayment of the
remaining 50 per cent of union
members’ dues.
The union therefore appealed to
parents, students and the general
public to show understanding
with the situation.

Education in Nigeria: which way out?

Years ago, education was the best thing
that happened to the scholarly minds.
Apparently, education opens doors long
closed! The regrettable show of
education , nowadays, would only
uncover some hidden scopes about it!
Examination malpractice is heralded in
parts if this country without fear of
being caught. It was unfortunate that
the just concluded senior certificate
examinations in the country, in the
south-south zone, were marred with
constant exploits of corruption!
Students copied from textbook after the
‘settlement’ of the examination docile
supervisor! Taken aback by all these
made a presumption of what the future

University of Ibadan 'UI' SSANU threatens strike over pay

The University of Ibadan chapter
of the Senior Staff Association of
Nigeria Universities (SSANU) has
issued a 21-day ultimatum to the
Federal Government over the
implementation of the 2009
agreement on salaries,
emoluments and condition of
service for its members.
The ultimatum, according to the
Chairman of the association, Mr
Wale Akinremi, is to send strong
signals to the state and Federal
Government that SSANU means
business.
The union took the decision at its
congress held at the Department
of Theatre Arts of the University,
at the weekend.
The congress frowned at the
alleged insincerity of the Federal
Government on the
implementation of the
agreement, saying it has
stretched the patience of
members.
The union said all the efforts to
ensure that the issue did not
degenerate to crisis was not
appreciated.
The congress also resolved to
resist attempts by state
governments to overburden the
workers with heavy tax,
stressing that only the tax rate
applied by the Federal
Government is acceptable.
The congress also deplored the
unfair treatment of members by
the state government whenever
there is demand for tax
clearance certificate by any of
them, arguing that “it is very sad
that our members are denied tax
clearance certificate at the point
of need and this has led to the
forfeiture of some
opportunities”.
Akinremi, who addressed
reporters after the congress,
said: “But, the level at which
things are now, we may have no
option since it seems the only
language our leaders understand
is the language of force. We
know the students are our
children and we don’t want to
subject them to unnecessary
hardship, hence our cautious
approach since all these days.
“Whatever happens thereafter
should not be blamed on us but
on the Federal Government
which cares less about the
citizens. Imagine the way the
agreement signed by the
government and the university
workers in 2009 was handled
and how its implementation
became another tug of war.
“Is it possible to give any worker
an assignment and would not
carry out the assignment for
months or even years and the
same worker would still remain
on the job? Certainly, it is not
possible, but, here we are with
our government behaving as if it
has any other thing doing than
to serve the citizens. We will
continue to demand for our
right, using the language they
understand.”

Unilag 2012/2013 Admissions: A Must Read for All Aspirants

Many candidates are very
worried, fear,
anxiety and frustration is all they
see.
Very are smiling and the reason
why is not
far-fetch. You need to know
about merit list,
supplementary list and
catchment areas to
fancy your admission chances.
These things are very important
so that you
dont kill yourself of tension.
after
I wrote about what to do if you
score below
50 in the post ume exams, many
students
have been calling and writing in
to ask for
merit list and supplementary list.
Below is my explanation.
MERIT LIST ADMISSION
Merit list is for those who meet
the cut off
marks. They deserved the
admission on
merit.
The university will fix a cut off
mark
following the general
performance of
candidates in a particular
examination.
They use a marginal curve for
this and make
sure for each department at least
they have
20-30 people who fall inside that
curve.
Example:
Now assuming cut-off is 60, and
you score
60 and above you will get in on
MERIT.
If you scored 59.98 you will not
still get in
on MERIT, although you may get
the
admission. Those that got in here
are not
better than others, just first
fruits.
CATCHMENT AREAS
After merit list they will then fix
the cut-off
mark for catchment areas. this
knowledge is
very important when you are
filling your
JAMB form.
Ekiti, Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Lagos,
Osun have
catchment with UNILAG-that
means they
have consideration for
admission because
the school is located in this
region, every
school have their catchment
area.
So If you are from Osun for
example and
you scored 57 you may get into
UNILAG on
merit even when the cut-off is
60.
do you understand?
SUPPLEMENTARY LIST
Supplementary is everyone who
has a

Unilag P-UTME Result/ Departmental Analysis

From my observation and
closeness to
unilag admission process, I have
observed that there is hardly
any one who scored 70 and
above in this year post ume
exams, if it exist they are very
few, in fact we can count them.
The general score is between
40-69. Please post names of
those who scored above 70
below.
Here is my assessment and
advise to everyone.
If you score 60 and above for
competitive courses, like
accounting, Bus-admin, medicine,
elect/elect/chem
Engineering, Mass comm. law,
computer science, Economics,
IRPM, and the likes if you score
above 65 you should rest assure
you are IN.
If you scored between 60-64 for
this courses your chances are
very very bright. like 85%.
If you chose courses that are not
too competitive, especially all
educational courses, you are
Home and dry-you are IN.
If you scored 50-59 There are
courses you will still be able to
get in for this marks.
But let say if you are not got in
because the
cut off is high, then you have to
make do with lower courses -
find out the course you can
likely do and chose collect the
change of course form for this.
